The martial art karate was developed in the Ryukyu Islands, now known as Okinawa, located in Japan. It was brought to the Japanese mainland in the early 20th century during a time of cultural fusion, and by 1924 Keio University founded the first Karate club in Japan. By 1932, all major Japanese Universities had Karate clubs.
Karate is the striking art using punching, kicking, knee strikes, elbow strikes and open hand techniques such as knife-hands, spear-hands and palm-heel strikes. A Karate practitioner is called a Karateka. For many Karatekas the roots of Karate stem from a philosophical nature, and combine ethical principles and spiritual significance to the practise of fighting. Karate training is all about "self-discipline, hard training and one's own creative efforts."
